Dahab is world famous for its windsurfing. There is also an area behind the spit known to windsurfers as 'Speedy', what area of flat waters and strong winds, making it an ideal area for surfing speed.

The word Dahab is Arabic for gold and is possibly a reference to the geographical location, where gold was washed from the wild. The name may also be a reference to the color of the sand in the south of the city itself. Some locals say it is the color of the sky just after sunset.
